This sand bottom, spring-fed, glacier formed lake is a gem of the Up North landscape and its waters extend into two counties and five townships. Some 900 residents occupy the picturesque shoreline. Fisherman love the Walloon Lake area, as did Ernest Hemingway, who spent 22 summers at the family cottage nestled along the lake's shore. Walloon Lake, named by a local butcher after a name he had seen on a railroad map, is a very desirable summer resort area. Within the last few years, the Village has come alive with a two new restaurants, quaint kiosk shopping, antique and art galleries, a bakery and in 2015 – a lakefront hotel.
